So You Want to know how NOT to approach a producer...?

Ok. Being a producer in 2011 and being accessible via social networks is yes a gift, and definitely a curse at times. I sometimes wonder if people being so accessible has created this world where fans and other artists have lost what it takes to properly approach ANYONE. Tonight, I will share with you one of the many times I've been approached in a manner I would not suggest ANYONE to use. I'm the last person to be giving anyone social advice, as I've been a beat hermit most of my adult life and as a kid stuttered beyond belief. But some things, cmon son. You gotta get better. Read from the bottom of the transcript upward.

Lets just skip past whatever my accomplishments I have as a producer. Whatever I've done, whoever I'ved produced for, and how successful my productions were, are all cool things that I'm proud of and have definitely propelled further into my career. But in this case...none of that matters. I wouldn't say this to a 18 year old kid who'd made beats for no one and never left his bedroom. This guys approach is fucked up. Now, I was about to post this shit up with his name and everything in it...but I fell back. This is a warning though. I'm a cool guy. Really. I'm really appreciative and look forward to working with ALL artists that approach me respectfully. Don't end up with your wackass approach getting dissed on this blog. Thanks.

How I Should be making beats

I posted this on my twitter page before. Now my blog. I've got this whole production thing wrong. I'm doing way too much. It's really just this simple:

All I gotta do is "put some samples on that."

Nike Does It Again.

Contrary to popular belief, not every hip-hop head is a sneaker head. I rarely know anything about new sneakers, and have never had a pair of Jordan's in my life. But this sneaker is simply something I can't ignore. Growing up, the "Back To The Future" series was definitely my brother and I's favorite movies ever. I've seen those movies at least 390324 times. So when I heard they finally dropped shoes resembling the ones Marty McFly wore in part 2, I got hype. I'll probably never own these, but I thought it was cool for them to actually make them. Here's the commercial for them, starring Christopher Lloyd (THIS MADE IT OFFICIAL FOR ME), and an NBA star growing in popularity.

IMAKEMADBEATS: producer, enigmatic hip hop mad scientist….and pro-skateboarder? Not quite, but we're happy to announce that DC Shoes recently tapped the Doxside Music Group artist to contribute the music for some of the episodes of their Street League Skateboarding DC Pro Tour Fueled by Monster Energy web series. Featuring pro-skate icon Rob Drydek as he preps for the launch of the Street League, the series gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the design and development of the world's leading street skating contest – and features IMAKEMADBEATS as the musical backdrop.

@TzariZM + @MidaZ + @Real9thPrince

"ThunderCats"
In much the same way that Lion-O, Panthero, and rest of the classic 80’s ensemble known as the ThunderCats defended Plundar from Mumm-Ra and the Ancient Spirits of Evil, Killarmy’s 9th Prince and Doxside Music Group’s MidaZ The BEAST combine forces to defend Hip-Hop from “Bitchassness.” “ThunderCats” sees the two emcees tear into a disgustingly grimy TzariZM produced track with the kind of energy typically reserved for running marathons. Prepare your screwface in advance.

No disrespect to other southern cities...

...but I've come to a firm conclusion that the term "mane" was created in Memphis, TN. Understand, as a child, my brother TzariZM and I travelled the globe. We got on at least 6 planes a year every year by ourselves starting when I was only four years old. We went everywhere. There's almost no part of the country that we haven't visited at least once. Every time we returned back to Memphis, the first thing that let me know I was back home was hearing the word "mane." NONE of the other southern cities we visited used this word. They used other words like "cuz" "cuh" "woadie" "bruh" "pimpin" and several others. "MANE" was ONLY heard in Memphis. In fact I remember going to other southern cities thinking "mane" was a southern thing, and they looked at us repeating "mane" while smiling and laughing like "where are you guys from?" My man Mave, the most Memphis sounding man ever, would go places with us, north and south, and have to explain "mane." In Memphis, there are people whose NAME is MANE. "Mane Mane" "Lil Mane" or just "Mane." "Mane, come get your breakfast!" This is a mom talking specifically to ONE person, her son, whose nickname is simply "MANE." Then outta nowhere, southern hip-hop took off and the south was on the map. It got to the point where even northern rappers were saying variations of "mane"...like "mang"...or "mayne" yet somewhere in the mix I don't think Memphis ever got its props for using that word that way. People assume its a southern thing. Look. THAT STARTED IN MEMPHIS.

Yesterday my 73 year old uncle said to my Dad, "Im 73 mane..."
He didn't get that from anyone younger. He'd been saying that since he was my age.

No one can argue with me about this. Over 20 years of research on this topic. I'm just here to #LetItBeKnown.

Before Words Were Even Said...

The image of this youtube video amazed me. You have Warren Buffett and Jay-Z being interviewed by Forbes magazine. I grew up in an era when seeing something like this seemed just as impossible as a black president. Even beyond the obvious racial significance, this is a rapper sitting next to Warren Buffett. Everyone knows hip-hop now, but I remember there not even being HIP-HOP sections of big music stores. And it wasn't like hip-hop wasn't big enough, it definitely was, it just wasn't respected. Nobody's parents dropped their kids off at school playing rap music. That stuff just wasn't happening.

"I started early at 7 years old reading my father's books. He was an investment banker." - Warren

"I started late, I never knew my dad and grew up in Marcy Projects." - Jay

...and yet here they sit, together, being interviewed by a magazine that mainly focuses on the richest people on the planet. Proof that at some point, you have to take control of your destiny, unless you want to blame the cards you were dealt for the rest of your life.

And although my early life is definitely closer to Jay's than it is Warren's, there is still so much to learn from Warren in this interview. What you can take away from this video goes far past anything hip-hop or financial. To me, its about success in general.

Art

The official release of the unedited Daylight/Nightlight EP's featuring Butta Verses and MidaZ is coming this summer. It will come with bonus songs all of the instrumentals for the original songs will be available digitally. Also, we will be releasing a music video for it that, I gotta say, looks like a movie. Seriously. Shouts to Varras Tower and TzariZM. We are putting out a limited edition 6 panel cd digipack with some incredible artwork from homey Travis Blaise, the amazing artist behind my selftitled's album cover. I just got "the idea sketch" from him, and here's a clip of just one panel. If you've listened to the previously released promo version of the ep's, you might recognize this as a scene from the song "7 Years." Can't wait to see the finished product.

Btw. I'm out in the streets doing this from my phone. I have no idea what this will look like on my blog.

Blueprint - Radio-Inactive (Video)

If you don't know Blueprint, get familiar. Here's a good place to start.

Thursday, June 2, 2011

Quality Control + Unique Squared + Doxside Music Group

Track 1: Produced by IMAKEMADBEATS.

SXSW Festival leading pro audio company Unique Squared, in partnership with Quality Control Marketing, parked a massive tour bus on Austin’s streets to serve as a state of the art recording studio. Throughout the festivities some of hip-hop’s most notable emcees stopped by the Mobile Studio to record exclusive songs over all-original production. The result is The Official SXSW Mixtape, a 30 track collection that captures the energy and creativity of SXSW.
The Official SXSW Mixtape is presented by Unique Squared, Quality Control, 2DopeBoyz and DJBooth.net. Acclaimed industry engineer Fokis handled the mixing and engineering duties while tracks were blended and arranged by DJ Presyce (three time Scribble Jam DJ Battle Champion). Featured artists include Tanya Morgan, Skyzoo, Khaleel, Nick Javas, J-Live and more. Contributing producers include Seattle’s heavyweight beatsmith Jake One, Von Pea (of Tanya Morgan), Crazy DJ Bazarro (of the Beatminerz) in addition to noteworthy up-and-comers Apollo Brown, IMakeMadBeats, Dynamite Brothers, D.R.U.G.S. and female producer Kels of TN2 Productions.

To witness artists selecting beats, writing and recording in such a short period of time was extraordinary and a testament to Unique Squared’s ability to create a unique and creative environment. It’d be an understatement to say this was a Herculean task on everyone’s part, thank you to all the partners and artists that helped make it possible.

FreshGrind.com (@FreshGrind) Presents "Live to Fight Another Day"

The homey at Freshgrind.com put together a really dope mix to help generate funds to Japan. You should get it, its only $6, and you get all kinda exclusive tracks from dope artists, like this one, from me. Check it out, and read more below.

Here's the highly anticipated "Live To Fight Another Day" project. This project is a Japan fundraising album and I've put it together in 2 weeks. I've designed the cover myself, contacted the artists and got the exclusive tracks myself and promoted it myself. I opted to help the Japan rescue mission because I've always been fascinated with the Japanese culture and I'm planning to live there for a short period of time in the future so I thought it's only right that I try to raise some money to support the cause. We all know the effect that the earthquake and tsunami had on the country, and with it being over 7 weeks ago people may have forgotten about the problems that still exist in the country. It's estimated that over 20,000 people died and that it will cost 27 trillion Yen to rebuild Japan. The small amount you donate will help cut down that figure and help those who need it the most. Hopefully this project will open peoples eyes once again leading them to donating some money. 100% of the proceeds will go to both the RedCross and Global Giving (I'm splitting it between the two).

The project features 33 artists and producers from around the world. The countries participating are, Japan, US, England, Wales, Poland, France and many more. Some of the artists and producers that have contributed towards the project are, Marcus D, e.d.g.e., IMAKEMADBEATS, Jimmy Astro, Shane Eli, Sound Fx, Dubzy, Shinobi Stalin, G-Scott, Lo Keys, Kevin Kartier, Waffles, Kyo Itachi, Bugseed, Osurek Bertop, Reese Jones, Flywalker, Prozpect, The Manor and many many more. There's a total of 37 tracks and 34 of them are exclusive tracks that have never been heard before. I know most you haven't heard of these artist bar a few but this project is also one to help raise the awareness of up and coming artists so please help both the artists and Japan.

I'd like to thank everyone that has contributed towards this Japan fundraising album!

***If you want to use the instrumentals in this project you must ask the producers first***

This project has been put together by Jagz.

TzariZM – 20 Minute Beat In 4 Minutes (Video)

Eating a sandwich. Taking a shower. Finding the perfect spot to slap an IMAKEMADBEATS sticker for the world to see. These are all things that most people can easily do within a 20 minute span. But Doxside Music Group's TzariZM operates a little bit differently from the rest of the world, as made evident in his latest video, "20 Minute Beat in 4 Minutes."

As one half of the hip hop duo The Heart & Brain, TzariZM is known for his skills as a producer (check out last year's Mbodiment if you haven't already). In this video, TzariZM takes viewers into the lab and gives a quick glimpse into what it takes to take a beat from its conception all the way to completion on his trusted Akai MPC1000.

Check out TzariZM's latest beat sampler, pick-up the Heart & Brain's Mbodiment, and be on the look-out for his next collaborative project with Planet Asia, Via Satellite, coming soon on Doxside Music Group.

Blueprint (@printmatic) drops Episode 4 of The Adventures of Blueprint

I've always liked Blueprint's stuff. Some of my homies would put me on to it, or I would overhear someone playing it. Always dope. I saw him perform at SXSW.... smh...Now I must know more about him. Much more. Check out Ep 4 of "The Adventures of Blueprint." I'm a fan. The type of fan that forgets he himself makes music, and listens to another artist simply to enjoy great music. It's great to be that.

Video: Has-Lo "Utero" (@Has_lo)

So last year, the original gangsters at Bloggerhouse.com interviewed me on their online radio show. Eric introduced me to the homey Has-Lo via Skype and soon after sent me some of his music. DOPE. Very dope stuff. So we all have been waiting for his full length to drop, and the time is here. Check out the video for "Utero" now, then go cop his album.
Shout out to Mello Music Group for another dope release, and Bloggerhouse.com for being the original gangsters to put me on to new music.

Check out how TZ made it.

New dopeness from Blueprint and X:144

Blueprint "So Alive" remix by X:144

from Prefixmag.com
Orlando producer X:144's take on the latest Blueprint release is, like it's source material, wildly insistent. It rides a cavalcade of skittering percussion into a life-affirming, circutious vocal hook, which is grounded by some gritty power chords. Just for good measure, a scuzzy guitar solo burns through the second half, making it the perfect accompaniment to someone running away from an explosion or five. Listen to it again and you'll probably want Janelle Monae on the track. Actually, can someone at Rhymesayers make that call? Like, today?

THE OFFICIAL IMAKEMADBEATS GAME. OUT NOW!!

THE GAME

To accompany his first solo album, which debuted less than a month ago via Doxside Music Group, producerIMAKEMADBEATS enters the gaming front, releasing IMAKEMADBEATS: The Game, a computer-based alternative to your X-Box which shares the artist's deep passion for production, and lets you-make-mad-beats. The concept for this project originally came during a brainstorming session between Synopse, creator of the IMAKEMADBEATS: The Game, and IMMB himself on how to stand out among other indie labels and best promote the IMAKEMADBEATS album. "We wanted to reach people who love the challenge of video games that may have never heard of me otherwise," explains IMAKEMADBEATS. Synopse also expressed possibility for future expansions of the game, adding that, "There were a few more ideas that were tossed around that you might see in later incarnations."

Setting the stage for the game, the creators have developed a unique storyline for players to get fully immersed: The first show of IMAKEMADBEATS' new tour is right around the corner, but tragedy has struck and all of his beats have been stolen. Now, it's up to you, the player, enlisted as IMMB's assistant engineer to use the virtual midi-controller to help reproduce several of the beats from the IMAKEMADBEATS album in a "Simon Says" style game-play. Available via free download for both Mac and Window platforms, hip-hop fans and gaming enthusiasts alike can take on IMAKEMADBEATS: The Game.

"I Bet" featuring Von Pea, J Freedome, and Xodus

The Song:

Following the 2010 two-part EP Daylight/Nightlight, IMAKEMADBEATS is getting ready to drop his debut solo album, self titled IMAKEMADBEATS, with the release of the album's first leak "I Bet." Co-produced with Greg Barbone, the track sees Brooklynite Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, Toronto's own J Freedome, and Xodus on the vocals, giving a soulful laid back introduction to first time listeners and a hint as to what fans can expect from IMMB's new album. The producer, who splits his time between Orlando and his current hometown Memphis, knew exactly what he wanted this song to encompass once the beat was made and so brought together these particular MCs to make it happen, "I wanted Von Pea on the song because I love his laid-back carefree style," says IMMB of his goal for the track, noting that he "thought it would mesh perfectly with fellow Doxside artist J Freedome's approach."

To coincide with the release of IMMB's album, Doxside Music Group are launching a stickering contest, giving fans a chance to get involved in the IMAKEMADBEATS movement.
